NANO TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY

HISTORY

Nanotechnology lab is a business unit of SHTP LABS which started up early on in the period of founding Saigon Hi Tech Park. So far the lab is producing a lot of benefits in terms of technical achievements and profits.

All of activities had begun with the success of water fast inkjet ink formulation, unveiling the possibility of the local manufacturing of the digital press ink in Vietnam for the next generation of digital printing of newspaper.

The nanotechnology lab at SHTP Labs had been officially founded in 2004. The nanotechnology lab was temporarily located at 35 Nguyen Thong, District 3 Hochiminh City, Vietnam until mid of 2008 and then relocated at Lot I3, N2 Street, Saigon Hi Tech Park, District 9, Hochiminh City, Vietnam

GOALS AND MISSION

  • The ultimate goals: Profitable research activities in the area of nanotechnology applications including nano materials, nano processing, nano electronic devices, clean technology, nanobiotechnology (diagnostics),digital fabrication, printed electronics.
  • Mission: Nanotechnology lab must have a strong commitment to produce hi-tech work force for the City and for the country of Vietnam from the next generation of young Vietnamese scientists and engineers domestically trained and oversea Vietnamese experts working in all over the world.

Nanotechnology lab must be innovative in challenging global market and reaching world class research activities. First, in the inspiration of world class ideas; secondly, pursuing the ideas until final stop; thirdly generating core competencies which should be attractive to the investors, gathering skill set of communication and negotiation to establish  the strong networking with the end user, effectively finding out the exit  for all of research & development efforts in the hi-tech related area.

FINANCE

Nanotechnology lab is making efforts to gain capital from private sector for routine works and not spending national budget. The total income from signed contracts reached 675,000 USD in 2009 and 53.3% had been released.

ORGANIZATION & TOOL SET

Nanotechnology lab is composed of analytical lab (NMR, UVVIS, Gel Permeation Chromatography for measurement  of polymer molecular weight distribution, Cyclic Voltammeter for  measurement  of  red ox potential, FtIR, Raman Spectroscopy, HPLC), organic synthetic lab (or nano fabrication lab 1) to synthesize new organic molecules (fume hoods, sox let tools, high speed centrifuge, vacuum oven, explosion proof refrigerator, vacuum pumps, truman heaters, filtration systems ), small particle technology lab (or nanofabrication lab 2) to produce nano particles by top-down process (ball milling, paint shaker, wood grinder, woodshredder, filtration system), nano carbon technology lab (or nanofabrication lab 3) to produce single walled carbon nano tube (SWNT), multi walled carbon nano tube (MWNT), clean technology lab to produce renewable energy devices, nanosuperconductor (design, fabrication, testing of aqueous fuel cell), electron microscopy lab to characterize nano materials (Hitachi 4800 FE-SEM, Agilent AFM, Veeco AFM). Nanotechnology lab also shares equipments with microelectronic labs.

ACHIEVEMENTS

80% of research subjects are created by our staff’s discovery during the jobs or by contact with clients and from the market information. Other 20% are joined projects with internal and external business relationship.

The major technical achievements can be cited as followings:

a) “Liquid” nano coal and its application in water fast  inkjet ink, light fast nano ink (partnership with Thien Long company)

b)  Micro patterning process with “liquid” nano coal

c) Proton Exchange Membrane for Fuel Cell, gasoline replacing fuel cell, aqueous fuel cell (partnership with AR Brown, Japan)

d) Carbon nano tube from agricultural waste products of Vietnam (partnership with Hitachi hi-technologies (Japan), Goodyear (USA))

e) AFM tip using multiwall carbon nano tube (MWNT) (partnership with 4Wind Technologies, USA)

f) Magnetic nano particles and its applications in Automated Diagnostic System (partnership with Bioland-Nam Khoa (Vietnam)

09 proceedings published at the most prestigious nanotech conferences in US and in Japan such as NSTI Nanotech 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, Carbon Conference, Imaging Science and Technology Conference.

MAN POWER

Nanotechnology lab trained young research scientists and engineers through their research activities. They must learn first about safety in the lab and the way of create new ideas to solve the technical problems from experiments. Right now the lab is led by material scientist in collaboration with 2 ME, 3 EE, and 12 young chemists graduated from diversified Universities in Vietnam.
